At the end of last week, Modern Art Press learned the sad news of Leon Kossoff’s death. As his gallery, Annely Juda Fine Art, stated, Leon ‘saw beauty in everything and in everybody’, devoting his life to the intensive portrayal of his surroundings and the people to whom he was closest. Neither the most famous nor most feted of post-war British painters, over his long career he nonetheless quietly established himself as a master of conveying great feeling through figurative art. It is a great sadness that Leon did not live to see his work collected in print in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné but we hope that, on its publication, the book will be considered to serve his life and oeuvre well.
